Making & Meaning:
A while ago, I began experimenting with clay, letting go of precision and rules to follow instinct. This piece, made from stoneware, is one of those early trials. It sat untouched on a shelf for over a year, waiting for its moment.
I had mixed seeds into the clay. When fired, they burned away completely, leaving behind voids, tiny absences, like lost memories or ancient marks eroded by time. Those small empty spaces spoke to me. I finished the form with a layer of 24ct gold lustre, a gesture to honour what’s been lost. To make the forgotten precious.
A piece of driftwood, a weathered stone picked up on a walk, these things hold stories beyond our understanding. Like them, this object asks to be held, turned, considered. It reminds us that even what disappears leaves a trace. And that trace is worth remembering.
